Weight Training
Myself and Ben were training at our gym on Wednesday evening and I noticed a group of 3 young guys using the cable pulley machine. They were doing cable chest flies on the machine, for those that are not sure what I mean it’s this exercise below….
They were trying to pull too much weight and their technique was really bad. It was clear that they didn’t know how to use the equipment properly. It looked very scary!
So, I thought I would write this blog today to give you a little advice regarding weight training.
Some of you may be more confident incorporating weight training into your exercise regime. I believe that resistance (weight) training is a great way to lose weight and tone your body. Whether you’re a man or a woman, weight training should be a part of your weight loss program.
Many people are scared of using the resistance machines, especially the cable pulley which I admit does look like some sort of torture device if you are not used to using it.
My advice is to always ask an instructor at your gym about the machines and free weights before you use them. Don’t be afraid to ask, it is a part of their job to help you and ensure that you are using the machines correctly and in a safe way!
Here are 3 golden rules when it comes to weight training….
1. Learn how to do the exercise with the correct technique before adding any heavy weight. Poor technique will cause injury and you will not target the correct muscles.
2. If you have an existing injury that could prevent you from doing the correct technique, e.g. due to lack of flexibility or poor posture, get the injury treated before you do this particular exercise. By doing this exercise you may aggravate the injury further.
3. Watch your ego! Don’t try to lift heavy weight just because the person next to you is or you are trying to lift the same as a friend! The correct technique is hard to maintain when you are lifting weights which are too heavy! Remember the correct technique is the most important thing, you can gradually add the weight as you get stronger!
If you follow these rules you will get much more benefit from weight training, you will notice your body starting to look more toned, you will feel more self-confident and most importantly you will be minimizing your risk of getting injured.
Keep safe and enjoy!
